Answer engine optimization

Answer engine optimization, without the jargon.

People don't just search anymore. They ask a question and get one answer back. Answer engine optimization is how you end up in it.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of getting your business named when people ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and other AI tools a question. Instead of ranking a page in a list, the goal is to be part of the answer itself.

The difference

SEO got you on the list. AEO gets you into the answer.

Search results

What the person sees
Ten links and some ads.
What you're competing for
A click, then a visit.
Where it gets decided
Mostly your own pages and the links pointing to them.
How you know it's working
Rankings and traffic.

Answer engines

What the person sees
One answer, with a few businesses named.
What you're competing for
Being one of the names or the one it picks.
Where it gets decided
Your pages plus what the rest of the web says about you.
How you know it's working
Whether AI names you, what it says and where it read it.
What makes a page worth quoting

What answer engines look for in a page.

None of these are tricks. They're what makes a page useful enough for AI to quote it.

A clear answer, near the top.

Not three paragraphs of pitch before the point. Say the answer, then back it up.

Your buyers' own words.

Pages built around the questions people actually type, not the terms your industry uses.

Proof you're real.

Reviews, specifics and real people behind the business.

A clear picture of who you are.

The same name, description and details everywhere you show up online.

Straight talk

What AEO isn't.

Not SEO with a new name.

Rankings still matter, but AI decides differently. Different job, different work.

Not a checklist.

A list of tips you implement alone won't change what AI says about you.

Not a guaranteed spot.

Nobody controls what AI says. Anyone who promises you a place in the answer is guessing.

How we do it

How we do AEO.

It starts with the questions and ends with the answer. Here's the order.

  1. Find the real questions.

The ones your buyers ask, in the places they actually talk.

  2. Check what AI says now.

Who gets named, what they say about you and where they read it.

  3. Write answer-first pages.

FAQ and comparison pages come first, because that's what AI reaches for when people compare.

  4. Fix how AI reads your site.

So it can tell exactly who you are and what you sell.

  5. Check again every month.

    And show you what changed.

Questions

Answer engine optimization questions.

Is AEO the same as SEO?

No, but they work together. SEO helps your pages rank in search results. AEO helps AI tools name you in their answers. Good SEO gives AI more to work with, but it doesn't get you into the answer on its own.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

Mostly they're two names for the same goal. AEO usually means answering questions directly. GEO usually means shaping the sources AI writes from. We do both. Read about GEO.

How long does AEO take?

Fixes to your own site can show up within weeks. Changing what AI says about you usually takes a few months, because AI builds answers from pages all over the web.

Can I do AEO myself?

You can do a lot of it. Start by asking AI the questions your buyers ask and see who gets named. When you're ready for help with the rest, that's what our Direct level is built for.

Does AEO work for product brands?

Yes. When shoppers ask AI what to buy, it names products. Getting your product pages, reviews and the right buying guides in shape is AEO for product brands.
