When it's worth it
An agency makes sense when AI is already part of how your customers decide. A few signs:
- Customers mention it. Someone says they found you or a competitor through ChatGPT.
- Competitors show up and you don't. Ask AI the questions your buyers ask and see who gets named.
- People research before they buy. The more comparing your buyers do, the more AI shapes the decision.
- Your basics are in place. Your website clearly says what you sell and who it's for. Customers can find your reviews.
When it isn't worth it yet
Sometimes the honest answer is not yet. Hold off if:
- Your basics aren't done. A claimed Google Business Profile or Google Merchant Center account, a clear website and a few real reviews come first.
- You need results in weeks. Changing what AI says usually takes months.
- Nobody asks AI about what you sell. Some categories just aren't there yet.
- You want a guarantee. Nobody controls what AI says, so nobody can promise you a spot.
How to tell a real agency from repackaged SEO
A lot of SEO agencies added AI to their service list without changing the work. The difference shows up fast if you know what to look for.
- Month one is keywords and blog posts
- They guarantee a spot in ChatGPT
- A single visibility score with no answers behind it
- They can't show you the actual AI answers
- The same playbook for every industry
- They start with your buyers' real questions
- They show you the answers word for word and where they came from
- They check what AI says about you, not just whether it names you
- They tell you what to fix first
- They tell you what they can't control
Questions to ask on the sales call
- What happens in month one, specifically?
- Can I see the actual AI answers behind your reports?
- Which sources matter most in my category and how do you know?
- What will I see by day 30, 60 and 90?
- What can't you guarantee?
A real agency answers all of these without changing the subject. We answered ten of them, including these, on our How it works page.
What it should cost
Prices vary a lot and most agencies don't publish them, which makes comparing hard. We wrote a separate answer on how much an AI visibility agency costs, with our own prices as a reference.
Key takeaways
- Worth it when your buyers already ask AI and the agency does visible work
- Not worth it yet if your basics aren't in place or you need results in weeks
- Ask what happens in month one. Keywords and blog posts means repackaged SEO
- A real agency shows you the actual AI answers and tells you what it can't control
Related questions
Is AI visibility just SEO with a new name?
No. SEO helps your pages rank. AI visibility is about what AI tools say about you, which often comes from pages you don't own. Good SEO helps, but it doesn't get you recommended on its own.
How long before I see anything?
Fixes to your own site can show up within weeks. Changing what AI says across the web usually takes a few months.
