Why doesn't AI traffic show up in my analytics?

The short answer

Some of it does, labeled as visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and similar sites. A lot of it doesn't, because people read the AI answer and then type your name into Google or go straight to your site. Those visits get counted as search or direct instead of AI.

Where AI visits actually land

AI sends people to you in a few different ways. Only one of them is easy to see.

  • As a referral. Someone clicks a link in the AI answer and your analytics shows it came from an AI site. ChatGPT often adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to its links, which helps.
  • As direct traffic. Links opened from an app, copied into a browser or stripped of their source show up as direct.
  • As branded search. Someone reads the answer, then searches your name on Google. Google gets the credit.

How to find AI traffic in analytics

You can pull the visible part into its own channel so it stops hiding inside referrals.

  1. In GA4, go to Admin, then Data display, then Channel groups.
  2. Click Create new channel group and name it something like With AI.
  3. Add a new channel called AI. Set the condition to Session source matches regex and paste the pattern below.
  4. Drag the AI channel above Referral so it gets checked first, then save.
  5. Open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition. Switch the channel group to the one you just made.

The new group applies to your data going forward. Check it after a few weeks.

Signs AI is sending you customers anyway

  • Direct and branded search traffic are rising without a campaign to explain it
  • Customers say it. "ChatGPT recommended you" is a real thing people say on sales calls
  • Your forms tell you, if you ask
The easiest fix: add "How did you hear about us?" to your contact and checkout forms, with AI tools like ChatGPT as one of the options. It's the most reliable signal you'll get.

Why nobody can give you an exact number

Because so much AI influence shows up as direct traffic or branded search, no tool can tell you exactly how much revenue AI sent you. Anyone who gives you one precise number is estimating. What you can do is watch the visible AI referrals, the trends in direct and branded search and what customers tell you. Then look at all three together.

Key takeaways

  • Some AI traffic shows up as referrals from AI sites
  • A lot of it hides as direct traffic or branded Google searches
  • A custom channel in GA4 pulls the visible part into one place
  • Ask customers how they found you. It's the most reliable signal

Related questions

Is AI traffic worth more than other traffic?

It can be, because people often arrive further along in deciding. It varies a lot by business, so track it on your own site before assuming either way.

Does this work for Shopify's own analytics?

Shopify shows referring sites too, so you can spot AI sources there. GA4's channel groups just make it easier to see them together.
