It writes an answer, it doesn't look one up
A search engine keeps a list of pages and shows you the ones it ranks highest. ChatGPT works differently. Every time you ask, it writes a brand new answer word by word. Two answers to the same question can name different businesses, in a different order, with different reasons.
That isn't a glitch. It's how these tools are built. Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and the others work the same way.
What changes the answer
- The wording. "Best insoles for standing all day" and "best cheap insoles" are different questions to ChatGPT, even if they feel the same to you.
- The details in the question. A job, a budget or a location changes who fits.
- Who's asking. Memory, past chats and location can shape the answer.
- What it finds right now. For many questions it searches the web in the moment. The web keeps changing.
- Updates to the tool itself. The companies behind these tools change them often.
What it means for your business
Don't panic over one bad screenshot. Don't celebrate one good one either. What matters is how often you come up across many answers, on which tools and for which questions.
A business that's named in most answers for its buyers' questions is in a strong position, even if it isn't named every single time. A business that shows up once in a while is still mostly invisible.
How to check it yourself
- Pick one question your customers really ask.
- Open a fresh chat each time. A temporary chat keeps your history from shaping the answer.
- Ask the same question several times and write down every business it names.
- Try the same thing on Gemini and Perplexity.
- Look for the names that keep coming back. Those are the businesses AI trusts for that question.

Key takeaways
- ChatGPT writes a new answer every time, so answers change
- Wording, details, who's asking and what it finds right now all play a part
- One screenshot tells you very little. Look at patterns across many answers
- Being named often across tools and questions is what counts
Related questions
Does that mean the answers are random?
Not really. The same few businesses tend to come up again and again for a given question. The answers vary around a pattern. That pattern is what's worth working on.
Can I make ChatGPT name me every time?
No one can promise that. What you can do is make it more likely, by giving AI clear, consistent information about you and showing up on the pages it reads.
